9 MUET TIPS | TIPS MUET MOD 2023 | HOW TO GET BAND 4.5

In this part, I will share with you what I did during my pre-MUET test. This is 100% based on my experience, and I think you can benefit from it too. Happy reading!

Alhamdulillah, my MUET result

But before that, lemme explain a little bit about MUET. If you've never heard of it, it is actually an abbreviation or acronym for Malaysian University English Test. It is a language proficiency test that measures English language skills for students who are still enrolled at the pre-university level in Malaysia. This test applies to STPM, Matriculation, Foundation and Diploma students who are planning to apply for their first degree programme at a local university.

There are actually two types of MUET: regular MUET and MUET on Demand (MOD).

Below are the differences between both modes.

So, if this is your first time reading my blog, Assalamualaikum Hi! I'm Nabila, and previously I studied at UITM Dengkil for the Foundation in Science course.

I took the MUET On Demand (MOD) because I just found out that the Foundation does not offer MUET exams at their own place (I thought they were going to baby-feed us by managing all of the process of taking the MUET, haha). I was frustrated, and so I asked one of my lecturers, the MUET coordinator. Below are my message and her response. (I hope this helps you if you are still confused on how to decide.)

Me : (please introduce yourself first after all๐Ÿ˜Ž) I want to ask about MUET , is it really necessary to take the test and have the result before sem 2? what are the pros and cons if I take the session 1 MUET 2023?

MUET coordinator : Yes, you need to sit for MUET preferably by this semester.

You can still sit for MOD Jan or Feb but that's the latest.
If you choose to wait for MUET Sesi 1 2023, it'll be very risky. You will sit for the papers either in March or April, and the result will only come out by May.

  1. You might be asked to fill in your UPU form before that so what happens if you don't have your MUET result by then?
  2. What if you don't achieve the minimum MUET band 4.0? You will not have the opportunity to retake.
  3. You might have forgotten whatever you have learned in ELC080 by next sem ๐Ÿ˜….

I'm not saying you CAN'T sit for sesi 2023 but you need to consider the risks involved. The choice is yours ya.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So long story short, I register for my MUET On Demand at December 2022 and the exam will be conducted at 19 January 2023 which is during my semester 1 break. This mean I can concentrate 100% on my MUET yeyy. Click here to read my journey toward sitting for the MUET exam (sooo challenging).
Now let's dive into the tips!

1. Have the right book and do all the exercises in it.

My sem 1 ELC080 Book

Back of the book

What do I mean by 'do all the exercises in it'? Yes, finish them all, and don't even let a single question go unanswered. I'm not really good at English, so I think it's crucial. This book helped me a lot, especially in familiarizing myself with the format, and there are lots of questions you can try. Moreover, they also provide sample MUET papers and answers! So pick the right book. It is definitely my ultimate guide and saver.

2. Youtube sources

I found quite an interesting channel to prepare ourselves for the MUET speaking test. On top of that, you can practice your listening test as you train your ears to listen to different English accents. Below is the list: Check it out!

3. Watch an English movie / series with subtitles.

For your information, I was taking my MUET in January, and I had ample time to prepare myself for the test. So, I don't really recommend watching movies or dramas just to learn English because it might be ineffective. Moreover, some content of the English movie is inappropriate for us as Muslims and students, even though we are already mature (watching something bad is an eye sin). But here is what I watch during my time:

  • Wednesday - comedy horror season one
  • The School for Good and Evil - Drama/Action
4. Read an English book

This one is highly recommended as you learn how to write well and increase your vocabulary. During my time, I chose to purchase an e-book on Shopee and read it on my tablet. There are many genres of fiction or non-fiction books to choose from at a cheaper price. Here is the list of books that I've read.

The book isn't too long or too short; it's just nice and beneficial. If you prefer a physical book, then go on. Since I don't have time to read a novel and money to buy the expensive one, I chose over my budget๐Ÿ˜‚. It's better if you can borrow some from the nearest library or even from your friends. Have a try!

5. Record and time yourself speaking on your smartphone / audio recorder.

This is a vital tip on how to improve your speaking skills. Recording yourself will help you do well in the future, as you can judge your own voice, face expression, and body language. Be alert to the time and speak with confidence! You can try the sample question and mimic how the test will be conducted.

6. Tell your friend to speak English together

Set a time when you can meet together online or face-to-face. During my time, I was in Sabah, and my friend was in Sarawak. So we did meet via Google Meet to practice our group discussion. Just both of us since I don't know other people who take the same date as me (con of taking MOD). At the end, I learned a lot from her, and I'm sure she feels the same. It is effective and fun to try!

7. Ask your genius friend to check your essay.

I am grateful to have TESL friend since we know they are majoring in English and surely they are good at that language. So, I ask her if she could help me check my essay for any grammatical errors, incorrect spelling, word choice and so on. You can ask your lecturer for this service but during my time, it is holiday, so I don't dare to disturb them HAHA. My friend agreed to help me and I could say only Allah can repay her๐Ÿ’• She definitely try her best to correct me and I learned a lot. Nowadays, maybe you can say "ohh just use grammar checker laa, easier and faster". Girls, the experience won't be the same and I can say you will not try your best to write the essay cause the one who are checking is a robot, they will not judge you. Contrary to the human checker, you will write your very best essay cause you want to avoid minor mistake that your age is not supposed to make and so the checker won't laugh at you (psychology)๐Ÿ˜‚

8. Search MUET Tips at Google, Tiktok, Youtube | What is your MUET band goal ? | know the marks you should get to achieve your desired band

I still remember that I came across this video on my tiktok fyp about MUET. She got band 4.5 which the best in her school. How motivating isn't it? I also did some research about MUET on Google and managed to read numerous tips from seniors and people who had already taken the test. They are the ones who inspired me to write this entry and hopefully you can get the benefit too! Here is my recommended Youtube video to watch. Besides, you can also watch this video to know the speaking format, officially from MPM.

My MUET goal at that time was the highest band, which is 5+. I like to keep my goals high so that my efforts align with what I want. Below are the marks you should get to achieve the band you want.

source : Google
Even though I didn't manage to achieve my goal, I am satisfied because I know I've tried my best (pat" on my back).

9. Do past year MUET

I am also grateful to found a telegram channel which provide MUET past year papers. You can download freely and try it on your own. The best part is they also give you the audio recording for listening test. It is so helpful! Here is the link to join the telegram channel.
